Course Description and Abstract:

The majority of implants placed today are made of titanium and titanium alloys and their long-term success is undeniable. However, over the years reports of metal sensitivity and other health concerns resulting from implantation of metal both in dentistry and medicine have fueled the search for alternative biocompatible materials. The discovery of advanced ceramics and development of bioceramics such as zirconia have broadened the range of applications of ceramics in dentistry and dental implantology in particular. Zirconia has become and been proven to be a highly biocompatible, bio-compatible and structurally stable implant material that is rapidly establishing itself as a viable alternative for intraosseous implantation and prosthetics.

This presentation will cover zirconia as an implantable bioceramic, the rationale, indications, and benefits of root to cusp metal free teeth replacement. There will be a half day hands-on session during which a variety of simulated clinical cases with ceramic implants will be done on artificial jaws.

Objectives:

Understand the properties of zirconia as an implant material, including its biological characteristics, health benefits, and manufacturing processes influencing implant design.

Explain the rationale, indications, and clinical applications of ceramic (zirconia) implants, including a comparison of osseointegration and clinical performance with titanium implants.

Identify appropriate patient selection criteria and develop treatment planning strategies for predictable outcomes with different ceramic implants.

Understand methods for objectively assessing implant integration prior to definitive restoration.

Select and apply appropriate restorative materials and techniques for monoblock and two-piece zirconia implants.
